Evolution

Evolution is not finished. In fact if evolution ever happened, then it can never stop. New challenges are bound to appear on planet Earth and along with it new possibilities of adaptation and change. This change is bound to involve all levels of our humanity, — spiritual, intellectual, emotional, vital, nervous, sensational and ultimately the very physical, a cellular change so to speak. This article attempts to explore some of these evolutionary challenges we face today and how we can consciously participate in them.

We can regard evolution as a mechanical, inconscient process or a conscious unfolding. If it be the former then there it is like a blind and random process at a mega scale where no one really has any particular role in it. But if it is a conscious process with a direction and a plan, then we can not only observe it but also consciously participate in it. There are several levels at which Nature unfolds itself creating several levels of self-awareness. What is seen as unconscious at one level may well be seen as conscious at another. What appears as lifeless and inert at one level of vision and understanding may appear teeming with life and even idea at another, life pushing matter to organise itself in certain ways.

The path of evolution opens through the choices we make. As human beings we face choices throughout our life. While there are many choices that compete with each other to preserve our present status, there is one that opens a door to the future. There is of course also a trap-door choice that hurls us back to the past. The present article deals with an overview of the choices we make for our evolutionary journey.

Evolution is the most happening event in the world. It is the oldest script of life as well as the most recent. But with the coming of the human being, evolution has taken a different sense. It is possible now to evolve consciously, to do our acts more purposefully and live meaningfully. Mankind seems to be trapped in a never-ending series of problems where each solution brings fresh problems in its wake. Despite all our advancements and achievements, we stand on the threshold of self-destruction. A closer look however reveals that this very threat, this crisis may well help us force open a hitherto unseen inner door and we may emerge suddenly in a new dimension of consciousness. At its bottom this crisis seems to be an evolutionary crisis where we have to either take courage and faith to cross the inner chasm towards the New or else fall back on our old ways but only for the worse. The first signs however indicate a new emergence and although the battle between the new and the old is far from over, at least a few human beings the world over are taking the first infant steps towards a new humanity of tomorrow.
