The transcendent function of dreams

This article explores the importance of night-time dreams and how paying attention to them can help us in many ways.Dreams prepare us for survival; they heal us physically and psychologically; they guide us in our spiritual journey. Dreams have been studied by spiritual schools; they are used by medicine healers. Psychotherapists use dreams to understand their patients, and through dreams the patient can get clues to heal him. This paper concentrates on how dreams accompany us in our inner journeys. Examples from spiritual traditions, Indian wisdom texts and Tibetan dream yoga are presented, along with Sri Aurobindo and the Mother’s teachings on dreams in the night-school of Integral Yoga.

Protecting innocence

This article discusses the delicate nature of childhood, in particular the various kinds of abuse and trauma classified under Adverse Childhood Experiences. It dives deep into the most painful form of abuse — child sexual abuse. It explores it from different perspectives — psychological, physiological, sociological, and judicial. The various governmental and non-governmental measures taken to counter this form of abuse in India are discussed as an example. The legal process is critiqued and some improvements are suggested. Crime and a poor childhood are shown to be linked. The Mother’s childhood experiences and how they helped her formulate a vital education programme are discussed. In conclusion, the importance of child welfare and protecting childhood is upheld as the foundations for a sane life in a sane society.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to think with the heart. It is the capacity to empathise and be compassionate towards people, animals, nature and even things. At its height, a person can become a channel for divine Love. Emotional intelligence is a survival skill we learn as children, but not everybody has it equally. In this article, the author lays out a practical programme to increase emotional intelligence. It is structured around some key topics that can each be taught as a series of classes. The introduction explains why emotional intelligence is important. Then the article goes on to state who should participate, how they should participate and what methods can be used to measure progress.
