The paradox of addiction

The worst addiction is to our limited sense of self. It is this egoic state, which we have carefully fabricated over lifetimes, to which most of us are really addicted. Only a sharp intellect that can cut through the illusions and delusions of relative life, coupled with a yearning for genuine peace, can give us the determination to confront it and then dissolve it into a higher consciousness.

An Enlightened Being can take any form, and wait for just the right moment, to deliver a transformative message — since such a one is unconstrained by human limitations and the element of time does not exist in the Absolute realm. Yogis use the metaphor of luminous pearls on a very long string to depict our successive incarnations. Earth is a school — and we need wisdom, effort and grace to figure out our unique lessons. And yet, if we forget that our true nature is immortal Spirit, we cannot learn these subtle lessons — and so we reincarnate over and over again ad nauseam, until we realise we are far more than our egoic system and firmly decide to graduate from samsara.

Can practising gratitude transform one overnight into a serene being? No, but a consistent and sincere readiness to look on the bright side most certainly shrinks fears, clears vision and allows one to move forward with increasing confidence and joy. This is what the author discovered for herself when a deadly spider infected her body and she almost died an excruciating death in a region surrounding the Himalayas.
