Physical marks appearing after injuries sustained in dreams

Science is always full of surprises. Each theory is, in fact, a convenient framework to understand some observations and it works until we are surprised by new facts. One reason for these new observations is that our field of observation itself expands. Secondly, the scientific community and scientific mind is itself opening up to incorporate new ways of looking at the same phenomenon. In addition, the change in the model of physics whose footsteps medical science followed is inviting. Finally having searched the material box of the body we are still to find final answers to life’s riddle. All this is coming more and more to the front in the human quest. The following article is one such example which opens new doors of perception within us.

Mental awareness in comatose patients and sleeping newborn infants

The phenomenon of unconsciousness is a mystery. A greater mystery is consciousness itself. Scientists and mystics have been exploring the secrets of consciousness for centuries but it is only relatively recently that there has been a more general upsurge of interest in it. Among the many explorers of this undefined and uncharted field, we are fortunate to have had amongst us Sri Aurobindo, the mystic par excellence, who explored this little-known territory in all its profundity, height and depth. Besides sounding its abysses, he also described its various shades and ranges, its levels and appropriate functioning and their interconnectedness and influence upon earth and humanity. There is now a real wealth of spiritual science left at our doorstep. This article explores just a few of the facets in the consciousness/unconsciousness dimension, drawing its insight from Sri Aurobindo and the Mother with appropriate parallels from the world of documented data.

On Multi-tasking, avadhāna-kalā and multiple saṁyama

By Sandeep Joshi - Jul 15, 2012

Man is a bundle of habits on one side and, on the other, a reservoir of unrealised possibilities. While much present- day science deals with man as he presently is, yogic science deals with man as he can become. Thus yogic science, in a way, is the science of man’s latent evolutionary possibilities that await discovery through systematic effort. The capacity of multiple concentration is one among many other possibilities that open their doors to seekers on the path of yoga. How does modern science view this? This is the subject of the article.

Embodied cognition in yoga psychology

By Sandeep Joshi - Jul 15, 2011

The field of psychology is still evolving. As human consciousness becomes aware of deeper dimensions, there will be a natural urge to shift existing paradigms to accommodate the emerging experiences. These experiences are not entirely new, but have so far been either ignored or explained away by modern psychology. However, man cannot be led into believing that he is nothing more than a bundle of nerves and a basket of chemicals. It contradicts his intuitive understanding of himself. No wonder psychology today is trying to break fresh grounds. However, its one challenge is to integrate its findings with the already existing body of knowledge derived from neurosciences. In this article, the author strives to see how far and to what extent the shifts in the field of cognitive psychology agree and are aligned with the insights and intuitions provided by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
