We are witnessing rapid transitions in the world today. It is as if everything has been put into an accelerated mode whose far ends are hidden from our sight. The truths of yesterday become the falsehoods of today. Our certitudes of knowledge turn into error like changing seasons. The ways and methods of yesterday lose their usefulness today. The values of yesteryears become redundant today. We are as if riding a roller coaster of some fast moving evolutionary time-loop. It is as if layer after layer is being peeled off, startling our eyes with a new discovery.

We move towards the New and the Unknown through the known. But the known may itself become a hindrance to new knowledge. The certainty of the present may well come in the way of expressing the new. There are two views we may have about Nature. One is that it is a mechanical energy and like any other physical and mechanical energy it can be harnessed and manipulated. The more we can learn the laws governing its processes, the more we can utilise and manipulate our world through it. But there is another view of Nature. It sees Nature not as mechanical energy but as a Conscious-Force, a Power that seems mechanical only on its surfaces but acts as if there is a great wisdom hidden within it. The elaborate and intricate processes, the complex adjustments and adaptations, the astounding far-sightedness even in its random acts, the manifestations of beauty and joy with a variety of colours and patterns and designs, give the impression of a master artist at play with forms.

There are three kinds of medical sciences that human beings believe in and practise. One science is the set of views and beliefs handed down through the generations. This science is the science of the past that we inherit. Not all in it is wrong or erroneous as is often made out to be. Much of it had been useful in its own time and much still helps. This science is based mostly on empirical evidence though often it is shown as a belief-system. However, even when it is practised as a belief-system it still may help! For human beings are affected deeply by their beliefs, including belief in modern science. Faith is a most important component in all healing and it is not always good to take away this faith and substitute it with half-knowledge and imperfect knowledge that modern science represents. Medicine is largely a practical science and if something helps, it helps.
